Our Mission

The First United Methodist Church (FUMC) Preschool is a non-profit, developmentally appropriate program providing quality childcare in Nacogdoches, Texas. We minister to children in the church and community by equipping them with appropriate educational, spiritual, and interpersonal skills for life in God’s world. The Preschool program is designed to develop the whole child through learning and play-based opportunities by helping develop their cognitive, language, social/emotional, physical, and spiritual development — with the ability for children to grow in confidence and independence by making choices, trying new ideas, and learning from mistakes in a safe environment.

A “learning centers” approach is the core of our curriculum as we believe children learn best by doing. Each classroom includes a variety of learning experiences through guided center activities that focus on developing fine and gross motor skills such as:

  • Art

  • Blocks

  • Discovery

  • Dramatic Play

  • Library

  • Music

  • Table Games

Spiritual development is an integral component of the Preschool program as we believe children develop a close relationship with Jesus and their spirituality grows with exposure to God’s love. This is presented in Chapel, Godly Play, Music, and through caring teachers and staff. The Preschool works to promote positive self-esteem by encouraging children to interact successfully with others, to grow independence and social skills, and to develop their unique God-given talents.
